The Royal Wedding–Did You Watch?

image

Bright and early this morning, Prince William and his bride Kate Middleton became the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Kate’s dress was designed by Sarah Burton for Alexander McQueen and boasted a near 10 foot train. Something borrowed was her diamond tiara, leant to her by none other than the Queen. William, who is a Royal Navy Lieutenant, Army Captain and Air Force Flight Lieutenant wore his honorary rank uniform.

They shared their first kiss on the balcony of Buckingham Palace (that little girl on the left doesn’t look so happy, does she?)

Here is the royal couple looking spectacular in their horse drawn carriage.

What do you think? Did you watch the Royal Wedding? Was is spectacular? Or maybe you couldn’t care less? Let us know in the comments, or cast your vote on our Blogger poll.

GTL in the UK: The Geordie Shore

Good news for the entertainment world – and likely bad news for humanity – has been recently announced. The news is that Britain is getting their very own version of the MTV-hit Jersey Shore! The reality show will take place in Newcastle, using the same format of its American counterpart. Eight housemates, one house, cameras always rolling and the party never stopping.

While the Jersey Shore had some interesting slang, the Geordie cast paints English with an abstract brush; just check out the MTV Guide to Talking Geordie. My spell-check just had a heart-attack!

MTV’s Guide To Talking Geordie
Spice boys – pretty boys
Tash on – snogging
Swilling – throwing a drink over someone
Soound as a poound – good/approved
It’ll be proper mint! – it will be great
ahfancyhor or ahfancyhim – I fancy her / him
Purely belter – really good
Alreet marra? - you alright mate?
Ah wes palatick – I enjoyed myself
Hoy – ye – taxi

Tweet it to Win it: We Have A Winner!

jared_d

Congratulations to Jared Dodge (@bunnyzilla), the winner of OnTheHub’s “Tweet it to Win it” Contest! Jared is now the owner of a brand new iPad 2, sponsored by Parallels, Inc.

Jared was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor’s of Science in Business Technology Operations Management at Neumont University in Salt Lake City, Utah. Like most college students, getting an education has left him short on cash.

“OnTheHub has allowed me to keep my software up-to-date, while also having food to eat!” says Jared.

We wish Jared all the best and hope his new iPad 2 will prove to be an asset when it comes to schoolwork.

Studying? Distracted? There’s an app for that!

The internet is a great tool for education and learning. It allows us to find and share information from one place at lightning speed! Need to double-check a fact or find a formula? The internet has got your back. There’s just one problem…

CaptureWhen studying, all of a sudden the internet seems like the most interesting thing in the world. One interesting link or fascinating Facebook post is all it takes and before you know it, two hours have gone by and you still haven’t opened your textbook!

Now, the obvious solution would be to turn off the computer. However, this may not always be a helpful solution; there are times when you just need to have it on. In my own case, my textbook was online, and my notes were typed.

After a quick search on how to block Facebook, I found a few methods that were either complicated (read: took over 10 seconds to implement) or unsuccessful. Luckily, when it comes to forcing yourself to concentrate, “there’s an app for that”.

If you have a Mac try out Self Control, an OSX-only application. It allows the user to create a list of websites that they find distracting and block them for a certain period of time. Once they have chosen the sites to block and started the timer, they cannot be unblocked (no matter WHAT) until the given time limit has run out.

SelfControl by Steve Lambert

Firefox users can use LeechBlock. This is an extension that allows you to choose What, When, and How to Block pages. There are also 6 sets of pages you can block. With this number of settings and features, you’re gonna concentrate like frozen juice!

PC users with Google Chrome, do not despair, because there is Website Blocker. This not-so-creatively named Chrome App allows the 'distractee' to block websites indefinitely, or for certain times of the day. Unlike Self Control, you can disable the app at any time, so I would recommend right clicking the app shortcut and selecting hide button. After all, why leave Pandora’s box out in the open, even if it’s locked?

We hope this helps those of you in your exam period studying!

Best Website Ever?

If you’re like me, you have a go-to website for every situation.

We want to hear about your must-visit websites and blogs, from any topic! Celebrity gossip, technology, news, music, fashion or whatever! The web is a huge place, and we can’t explore the whole thing by ourselves. We need your input to find the most interesting sites for students! Let the whole world know where the best content can be found!

Here are a few of my personal favourites:clip_image002

Humour: The Onion – A hilarious fake news site, with headlines like “American Media Reports News Other Than Zoo's Escaped Cobra As If Anything Else Really Matters.”

They have also expanded to television, on IFC with the Onion Sports Network, and the Onion News Network.

Technology: Engadget - A great source of news and information for nearly every piece of consumer technology under the sun! They have an excellent layout, and very interesting writing, keeping you up to date on the newest products, rumors and innovations in the tech world.

Music: The Hype Machine is a music blog aggregator, and the primary source of my musical discoveries. The website posts songs that have been blogged about, and allows users to follow specific artists, so they get the latest songs by their favorite performers as soon as they come out!

Now OnTheHub wants to hear from YOU. Send us your comments about the best blogs and websites that you just can’t live without!

Cheers,

AlexB and the OnTheHub team
