Contrary to popular opinion, the best time to see the shuffling, blank-eyed walking dead, is not at midnight in a cemetery. It’s on the way to an early class, or on the commute to work. However, if you’re interested in the more entertaining variety of zombie, here are some modern films you do not want to miss this Halloween! This is not a complete list, so don't be too upset if your favorite doesn't show up on the list!
28 Days Later (2002) – Directed by Academy Award Winner Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire), this is a movie that digs a little deeper than your average zombie flick, while maintaining great pace, acting and of course, scares! A bicycle courier awakes in the hospital after getting in an accident, only to find himself in the middle of a zombie ridden Britain!
Zombieland (2009) – A great zombie comedy with a great cast. Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network), Woody Harrelson (No Country for Old Men), Emma Stone (Superbad), and Abigail Breslin (Little Miss Sunshine). This movie is truly funny, and a good recommendation for those who want the zombies without the horror! Be sure to see Shaun of the Dead too!
Dawn of the Dead (2004) - The original was a classic, and, in my opinion, the modern remake by 300 director Zach Snyder was an adaptation up to the task! As much as a must-see as its predecessor! You have your mall, your variety of characters, and you have your zombies. A lot of them. Let the mayhem begin!
[Rec] (2007)- This film takes a Cloverfield approach, with the entirety of the movie being filmed through a camera one of the characters is holding. I found this movie to be horrifying, and I am not the type to be scared in a movie! Watch as a reporter and her Camera man get a little (actually, a LOT) more than they bargained for while shooting a late night television program!
Planet Terror (2007) – Robert Rodriguez of Spy Kids and Sin City fame brings us this Grindhouse feature (see also: Death Proof). When a biological weapon is discharged, zombies start to roam the streets in this action –comedy-horror. A great cast and exciting plot made this a greatly entertaining movie.
We hope you enjoy these movies, and feel free to comment with your own favorites!
Have a Happy Halloween!
