Tips for International students studying in Canada or the U.S

If you’re studying in Canada or the U.S from abroad, we understand that it can be very exciting, yet a little overwhelming at times. In order to help you out, we’ve provided you with a few tips to help you get accustom to studying away from home.

Spend some time getting to know the history, culture, politics and customs of the country where you’re studying. This will allow you to gain a better understanding of how the country works.

When making new friends, try to include making friends with people who have lived in the country for a while. This way, you can learn the language (including common phrases), find out where to hang out and cultural norms to help you gain the full experience of studying away from home.

If you are looking to find a job, talk about tuition or school related questions talk to your schools’ International Student office. They will be able to provide you with useful information and resources.

If you’re looking for information about international student loans, international students’ insurance, student tax return information and general information, we suggest visiting: InternationalStudent.com

It’s also a good idea to locate your country’s embassy for reference.

We hope you have a great year studying abroad!

How to make the most out of your school year

We wanted to provide everyone with a few tips on how to have a fun, productive year back-at-school.

Set goals for yourself, whether you want to improve your marks, study abroad next year, getting back into shape or meeting new people. If you write it down- you are more likely to achieve your goals if they are written on paper for you to see on a daily basis.

Don't let your readings and essays' pile up- designate some time after each class to go over your notes, and making sure to stay up-to-date on your assigned readings- seriously, this helps you retain information and increase your understanding of the subject.

If you find yourself falling behind in a class, don’t wait until you’re a week away from your exam to get help. Ask your professor for extra help or look into hiring a tutor.

Participate in school activities, so that you can feel part of the community and you’ll be able to meet more people. This will also give you a more hands-on experience of being at a four-year school and its campus life.

Remember that University/ College is about learning to balance your social life, work, studies, friends, significant others, etc,

If you have any stories of how you made the most of your school year, send them into: feedback@onthehub.com

Have a great weekend!
